The Queensland Flood Crisis - Part 2 Commission of Inquiry into the floods

“One thing we as a society don’t really do anymore is build for where we live. We build for how we want to live . . . There is a wonderful ability to be living in denial and where disaster happened a long time ago we get disaster amnesia.” Julia Rochman CEO, Institute For Building & Home Safety (USA).

The Commission of Inquiry into the Queensland floods commenced last week. Ideally the reports produced by the Commission will guard against Queensland developing disaster amnesia. The Commission has, amongst other things, been asked to report back and provide recommendations on the preparation and planning for future flood threats and risks.

In addition to providing you with some detail on the set up and objectives of the Commission in this report on the Queensland floods, we also look at an issue which is appearing more frequently in mainstream press – that of insureds being properly informed of flood exclusions in their home and building policies.

Finally, we look at some progressive thinking in the United States involving grown men playing God and simulating hurricanes with a view to improving on the design and construction of buildings in disaster prone areas.
